    WineXpert Disappointing Inital SG

I have probably made 50 kits over the last few years and have occasionally found some to be what I thought had a low initial SG but never this low. I started these just like all the others added water to the mark on my primary which yeilds about 24 ltr so I will have a small volume to top up...

    WineXpert Disappointing Inital SG

I recently started two Wine Expert kits, An Austrialian Shiraz and a Chianti. Both kits when rehydrated to 23 Ltr had low SG. The Shiraz was 1.056, The Chianti was 1.045. I checked this with two hydrometers to be sure. I have made many kit wines over the years from all the manufacturers and...

    Wine Cooler

Smurf I live in Houma and seem to be the only winemaker in this area although I am getting my son-in law interested. He is starting his first kit this weekend. Hopefully this will reduce the raids on my wine rack.

    Wine Cooler

I just returned from visiting my daughter in Houston, While I was there I just happened to check Craigslist and picked up a Vino Temp wine cooler for $400. Brake Bleeder Pump for De-Gassing...

You are doing it correctly, as the wine degasses the vacuum will drop as co2 is expelled from the wine. you will have to keep pumping until all the co2 is out. I usually stir by hand or with the whip to remove most of the co2 and then use the brake bleeder for finishing. When you can pump it...

    Which white wine kit

Thanks for the information, I was leaning toward the Muller-Thurgau as I have a lot of friends that like a semi-sweet wine. Along the same lines my brother-in law and his girlfriend are big vin rose fans which they proudly decant from a BOX, I was going to make a White Zinfindal for them until...

    Which white wine kit

I am wanting to make a white wine kitto have around for guests. I do not partake of whites very often so I am a newbie in this area. The two I am considering so far is a Pinot Grigio or a Muller-Thurgau. I purchased a bottle of Pinot Grigio for a taste test and found it very good, the Muller...

    Bulk aging and airlocks

I was reading on another forum on bulk ageing in which it was stated and agreed on by several others that unless you bulk age in a oak barrel it is better to bottle and let it age in the bottle. something about micro oxygen through the barrel and cork helps with the ageing. the people on this...

    First batch for 08

It appears to be an Owari Satsuma, Very popular backyard citrus tree here is South Louisiana. Satsumas are profilic, very sweet, almost no seeds and very easy to peel. The one drawback is they will not survive tempatures below 25 degrees F. I have seen them planted in pots though.

    Mosti Mondiale Vinifera Noble Shiraz

What about tap water that has run thru a water softner, I have one on the house so I have always bought the .25/gallon water from the Kiosk in front of my supermarket for my wine. I suspect this water is pretty mineral free, so far all my wines have turned out OK except some have been slow to...
