    Corks, and other bottle stoppers

Thank you. Each day I learn something new.

    Corks, and other bottle stoppers

My daughter offered to get me corks at the brew supply store in Anchorage. I forgot to tell her 1.75 inch-so now I have 100 1.5 inch corks. #9 agglomerated. The store is 350 miles away, so I am not going to trade them in. What should I know about using shorter corks? My floor corker pushes them...

    Corks, and other bottle stoppers

I use my “floor corker” on my kitchen table. It needs a stable platform to stand the pressure. I do it standing up. In order to sit, it would have to be on the floor.

    Spruce tip wine

Great ideas, thanks. The spruce tips will be out in a few weeks here in Fairbanks. We have lots of white spruce on our lot, but I am intrigued by the idea that black spruce tips might be better, or even just different. Living here for almost 30 years, I should know for sure, but we have always...

The floor corker is NICE. I have not tried anything else. I am happy with the investment.

    Corks, and other bottle stoppers

Thanks for the great discussion. I paid $71 for my floor corker - new. Seems like a great investment. My first bag of corks had a thin layer of natural cork on each end and ? agglomerated ? in the middle. The packaging was pretty useless - though it specified that they were for 5 years or less...

    Rubber bung won't stay put

That has been my experience as well. New bungs are more slippery than older ones. Took a few days (with no tape), but they finally stuck.

    Corks, and other bottle stoppers

I have officially corked my first 25 Bottles of wine. Fruit wines in small batches…irrelevant, except that they won’t age so long that they need the really expensive corks. I know it’s been 25 bottles because the package of corks I bought had 25 corks in it. That package didn’t say anywhere what...

    Post fermentation time after clearing

I looked through 2 local grocery stores for anything in glass gallon jugs. I didn’t find one! I also didn’t think of Carlo Rossi - what a great idea. I have one wine making supply store in town - actually, beer is their thing mostly. $6 each for a gallon jug, which is good, if they aren’t out of...

Frozen, sweetened peaches - 18 pounds.

I have acid blend and a recipe:) I will test SG - I have a hydrometer and other goodies from my husband’s beer-making phase 10 years ago. What do you use to test pH? I haven’t done that yet.

Thank you so much. I should have done my homework. So far, no harm done, but I will make the change for sanitizing😎

I too have One Step. It was the only brand available in town. I always thought it was similar to Star San.

Brand new at this fine hobby

My strawberry batch foamed like crazy and smelled awful. I stirred it several times a day because the foam formed a mat. After 5 days I strained out the floating fruit and it was much better. 2 days later the fermentation slowed appreciably and I racked it to gallon carboys. It tastes wonderful-...
