    Grape variety help please

Yes, the wood you cut off does not bear fruit, only the new growth on grapes bear this years fruit. I would not be worried to prune anytime from now on, but I’m oldand kinda like doing it in a bit warmer weather than at present! If you want to keep the arbor, just pick out two main trunks per...

    Grape variety help please

Many places on old farm homesteads have an arbor such as yours. Seen many that have prolly never been pruned for years or maybe never. Most people are scared to cut them back, and I’d bet the farm that they are concord. First thing I’d do is cut back severely, and establish several main...

    Searching for Un-grafted Hybrids (Traminette)

I hear you, bud. When it used to work and now doesn’t, I find weird. I ask myself, what has changed! The only thing that really changed for me was starting in sand, which I used to do, and….I’m pruning later, so the vines are being started later. This year I am going to take cuttings for...

    Searching for Un-grafted Hybrids (Traminette)

My mamma always told me that if you fail, try try again. I’ve got about two acres of grapes, and the largest part of that is from vines that I rooted myself. It is kinda weird, but the first six or eight years I rooted vines, almost all of them took off, now the last four or five years, I have...

    Searching for Un-grafted Hybrids (Traminette)

Why not root some cuttings? I don’t grow it, but I bet some on here do!

    Coping with heat

When the seeds turn brown, your within a month! After that do a random brix check in the vineyard. My biggest problem is always insects. Wasps are always a plauge, but this year, some kind of moth was sucking the berrys dry, all of a sudden. I sprayed as soon as I found them, but it was...

    2021 Estate Frontenac

Mine also! Netted my verona the other day also. I'm hoping to make it a week yet before I pick, the brix has been between 18 and 25 on what I checked yesterday. I've got to go to Wy for a couple days the 19 and 20th. They need to hang till I get home!

    Coping with heat

Yep, that's hail damage alright. I've had berries split in half before, and seeds sticking out. Some of them will heal, some not! Yeah, the life of a farmer!

    Marquette starting veraison......

All of my cultivars are early this year. Wonder why! Frontenac is not much earlier than usual, but the verona and concord is gonna be right behind it....within a few days. Even the norton has some pink clusters, and is still a long way off, but I usually pick it the end of September.

How to Shoot Thin in the Vineyard

Andy, I'm gonna give your question a stab. I did last year and decided against it this year. Several things entered in. When I cut them back last year, I haad a zillion more stubs that hooked on my nets, making it very hard to get the nets on and off. That was the big reason I left them on...

Put up or ? I got myself a vineyard

Yeah, I got three projects. All have been sitting after I moved here. Had too much to do to get back to them. A 32 chevy, ground up build is about 60% done, a 40 chevy PU, and a 60 chevy 2dr station wagon, that I used to drag race fourty years ago. Don't think I'll live long enough to finish...

    Marquette starting veraison......

I just netted my frontenac this morning. Just finished one row, and a mockingbird flew to that row and discovered his meal wasn't free anymore! lol

    Too much water...

What vines are those? I have frontenac that grows like that. Gave them a haircut last year, and had a heck of a time with my netting. Think I'll just leave them alone this year, besides I haven't had time. Some fronds are over six feet long. We are getting rain, finally. Rained hard last...

    Grape Mite - Eriophyes Vitis

Andy, I used a small dose, about a trird of a cup, and hoed it in in a circle about at the drip line of the plants. This is sea salt that is collected for this purpose, not what you would buy to salt food with. The sea has a marvelous echosystem, that balances way over a hundred micro and...

    Grape Mite - Eriophyes Vitis

I have been fertilizing with sea salt this year. Before everyone piles on, and tells me that salt will kill my vines, I need to explain. Sea salt has the most complete make up of micro nutrients of anything on earth, but must be used sparingly, because of the salt! With the correct nutrition...

Is this all roundup damage? I hope I didn't really screw things up.

I use Liberty, and been very pleased with the results.

Middle section of cane has no shoots

It gets kinda frustrating sometimes, dang grapes grow everywhere but where you want them to! I have several cordons that are void of buds for a distance, but the darn things will put buds all over the trunks, but not where you need them!

Did my Summer royals give its life to give me grapes?

I had a verona vine that was doing well last year, and had lots of grapes on it. Then right before the grapes were ripe, it collasped and died. I feel that is what happened to it, it was a three leaf vine, so I let it fruit, and prolly shouldn't have!

    Southeast Kansas vineyard

Yep, I'm about an hour west and a we bit south of Hiawatha. I have quite a few friends that live in and around Independence. I used to pipeline for a living before I retired, and worked all over Ks, Mo, Ne and a little in Ia. Even a few jonts into Ok. Loved the job, but hated living out of a...
