    Under stair cellar progress

Greetings gang! It's been a while. I "finished" my under stair cellar (except for completing a few mostly aesthetic door details) last spring. I ended up using spray foam insulation and not insulating the floor at all. It held up well to a brutal Atlanta summer and I have been steadily filling...

Greenboard: crucial or less than crucial?

Thanks guys. Down here in Atlanta things stay pretty humid but if the RH in the cellar gets below 55% or so for a prolonged period of time I'll hit it w/ humidifier for a few.

Greenboard: crucial or less than crucial?

I've reached the point in the cellar construction where I'm considering my wall options, and I know everybody says to use greenboard to keep moisture in. However, through a friend I have a great deal on a 1/2" wood composite material for the walls and ceiling. It's much sturdier as well as...

    Vapor barrier Spray

My contractor buddy who's helping me was able to get a 200 sq foot kit wholesale from his usual distributor. It's still damned expensive, but I'd only save about $150 if I went with the 6mm poly/insulation combo instead of the spray foam. Plus, since my cellar is under the stairs and has a ton...

Very nice maximization of the space you have. I still haven't finalized my racking plans. Us "under stair" folks have some unique challenges when it comes to dealing w/ racking logistics.

    Vapor barrier Spray

I'm in a similar boat. I looked into using spray foam insulation b/c it seemed nice to kill two birds (VB and insulation) with one stone... but I've never used it before and it does seem a bit pricey so I'll probably just stick w/ the 6mm poly. It seems like if you're going to spring for the...

    Under stair cellar progress

Well, things are moving along "with all deliberate speed..." However I suspect now that there's a large hole in the hallway, I will receive plenty of domestic encouragement to get this completed sooner rather than later. The room is now sealed off w/ 2x4s and Great Stuff, and the cooling unit...

    Progress finally!

That looks awesome. Love the red paint on the crawl door back there, and the wood floor is mighty nice. Although I must agree w/ Vacuumpumpman, it makes me extremely jealous given the sorry little amount of space I have to work with. :m Keep up the good work!

    Under stair cellar progress

Well with the demo finished, I've started completing framing where necessary. Also after much waffling I decided I would play it safe and have a dedicated circuit for the cooling unit. This required running the electrical line to a circuit panel in the back of the house... which was NOT fun. Had...

    Under stair cellar progress

It will indeed be cooled w/ a through-the-wall unit. I'm just going to lay down the VB over the existing plywood floor, place a few 2x1s on top of it (so the foam board isn't crushed), lay 3/4" foam board between the 2x1s, put my flooring over that and pray for the best.

Wade that sounds spectacular and is a very good idea to maximize the space. Unfortunately that sort of setup is far out of my skill range... At this point I'm just congratulating myself that the staircase still stands after i completed demo work. I may revisit your idea down the road though. Thanks!

    Under stair cellar progress

You think so? I'd love to not have to deal with figuring out the floor barrier issue. You don't think that may create moisture problems somewhere in the cellar walls? I've read so much about the importance of vapor barriers and how if you don't have a complete one the insulation will get soaked...

    Under stair cellar progress

I would kill to have a 3' level area in my tiny space. Unfortunately as the project goes on, the space gets smaller and smaller. Let me know what you end up doing, I'll be interested to hear since we're in similar situations.

    Under stair cellar progress

I'm going to use a CellarPro 1800 XT: http://www.cellarprocoolingsystems.com/purchase-wine-cooling-unit/1800-wine-cooling-unit/1800XT The floor is wood. I initially thought like you suggested--get into crawlspace and insulate from below, but that would make it impossible to get a fully...

    Under stair cellar progress

Well, I dove on in this wknd and got the demo work done. I'll only have 3.5" in walls and slightly more in ceiling in which to put insulation, but that was pretty much expected. It's an interior room directly above the crawl space. I'm thinking with the limited space for insulation, I'll...

    Texas wine cellar....

Captain, your cork idea inspired me to do the same. I gathered up all the corks in the various drawers and nooks around the house last night... and realized they would be enough to cover perhaps 1/20th of the door. I'm going with the foam board and just glue corks to the back as I go. My...

    Temperature and Humidity Monitoring

Hi Penguin. I don't know if you're looking to just do this as a hobby, or as a lucrative invention, but there are some of these already out there (like this one). Hope I'm not being a wet blanket.

Converting existing door to wine cellar door

Yeah Arne, as you can see from the photos, when I said the space was small it was a gross understatement, so no way I can have an inward opening door. Captain, that is an intriguing idea but it seems like you'd need to seriously hollow that thing out to get enough foam in there to make a real...
