Red oak is too porous for barrels. So, it's a given that it won't be good for that. I have a
batch of wine I'll split and try some of each and let you all know how it goes. Thanks for the
    responses.

Not to be contrary, but a little more research and I found that pin oak is the species that has
foul tendencies. I'd never heard of pin oak, but read that it grows in swampy areas. So, that
    sort of fi...

What Norcal said may be true. However, I bought one off Amazon that has worked well. I've had
it for full for about 9 months (second batch in there now). I first filled it on April 15 of
    last year com...

Nice to be able to make so many varieties. Regarding Concord wine, it's a matter of what you
like. Some people say the wine tastes like grape juice/jelly from Concord. Valiant is similar.
    But, I know ...

FWIW, the small wine makers that buy grapes around here have been asking for more Marquette
grapes. I am in Colorado in Zone 4b, not quite Wisconsin being much further south. I have
    Valiants, Frontena...

My experience....you don't necessarily HAVE to hydrate the yeast. However, it's a good idea to
be sure you have good yeast. If the yeast doesn't kick off in the process of hydrating it in
    warm water a...

Probably long since forgotten by now. But this is how the Pinot Grigio turned out. The wine
cleared just fine. The Pinot Grigio grapes were harvested very late, in November and pink
    skinned. My neighb...

I understand as a barrel, red oak is unfavorable due to the porosity and all. But has anyone
tried it in a carboy? Unless I'm way off base, it seems that being porous would be advantageous
    since the g...
