I'm doing a lot of wine this year. With a partner, we are doing 3 tons. We are about 1/2 done and I'm a physical mess. My back, my neck all driven by lifting (I assume). I'm 55 and in decent shape, know proper lifting techniques, but this year is getting me. My wife said next year, I need to be prepared, physically for this. Anyone else do crush cross training?

I like to hedge my bets.

Prior to crush, I try to take care of my winter firewood needs.

That gets me into shape so that I can watch the younger kids in my family lug around the grapes!!!! :)

4Score, I think you are right on. I think it is all about the carboys; 8lb per gallon X 5 + carboy is right around 45-50lbs. Seeing how we are doing a ton at a time, that means lifting carboy 40-45 times. That's just too much to do in a few hours. Our Mourvèdre press was near perfect; didn't lift a single carboy. Scoop right from the macro bin into the wineeasy, vacuum press up to a higher greater than the Brutes and simple racking cane down into them. Good plan, worked well, no lifting.

I dunno. I think you should get another Brute. :h

The problem you have when you make wine at a friend's house....is how are you going to get large quantities safely moved back to YOUR house....without killing yourselves.

Answer = Engine Hoist

Gee, why did NorCal have access to an engine hoist? :) :) :)

Actually, this is a little coincidental: I couldn't sleep for hours last night, so I was lying there planning exactly how I am going to move a large piece of equipment with an engine hoist later this week. Then I got out of bed, had breakfast, and read this post!
