No longer a newbie, but still clueless.
I would only use them in a grill/smoker.
NO! Don't do it! I ruined a pefectly good batch of beer with those! Extremely strong flavor. If you want a whiskey taste, just drink some good bourbon.

I would recommend that instead of the JD chips, which could be red oak as well, go to a local lumber mill and ask to get the trimmings from a white oak run. Make certain they know positively it is white oak. Then toast your own. I have been doing that for a year + with really good results.
