Vines Need Help

Hello Everyone,

I recently moved to a new home in the Seattle, WA area and I was pleased to find a grapevine(s) growing along the fence in the side yard. I know that it needs some pruning/trimming, but I am not sure how to begin. I have looked at several books, videos, and posts regarding general vine maintenance, but I wanted to post some pics of my specific case to get some advice as to what would be the best process for these particular vines.

I have gardened for many years, but I am a novice when it comes to grapevines.

Pic 1 is the base.
Pic 2-4 is progressing from the base to the terminus of the vines
Pic 5 is the terminus looking back towards the base

Thanks in advance!:xmas

(I dont know why the pics keep posting inverted. SORRY.)

Are you from Australia? ;D

Have a look at the "pruning advice" thread just below your thread, I described the cordon and the vsp training system there. For a top wire cordon, which is quite popular in this forum, you just follow the description of the cordon system and let the shoots hang down instead of letting them grow upwards.

As far as I know american varieties prefer to hang down, european varieties want to grow upwards.
