How are you able to tell how much alcohol is in your wine? I know you can use the hydrometer, but how?

If you search enough you will find many calculations which will give you slightly different results. All of which should be within 0.5% of each other.
This simple calculation is one I use:
Starting Gravity-Finish Gravity x 134.8
Example: 1.090 - 0.995 = 0.095 x 134.8 = 12.80% ABV
If you have MS Excel you can use this calculator I put together which has a temperature correction.
