My aunt got me a wine press for Christmas. I wanted to use it for a batch of blackberries, but now I'm reading that I'm supposed to "crush" the fruit before pressing it? It seems like the pressing process would crush it too. Am I missing something?

It probbly wouldnt do a great job of breaking upthe fruit like it needs to be. Youd be better off mashing it up with your hands IMO.

Wade is right - a press will squeeze some of the berries enough to burst - but not all.

You need to crush them them first - the press later to get the juice that is left after the free run juice.

A grape crusher would work good for that unless you were talking about apples aor pears as they require a much more agressive type crusher specifically designed for them.

Berries are much easier to just freez 1st then let Pectic Enzyme do its thing. Like Wadse said I would use it only for hard fruit.
