quick question--how often do you typically take a hydrometer reading during primary fermentation? can you do it every day? after a few days? does it matter?

I take one when I start and then not until day 7 when I am ready to rack into the secondary when making kits. My fermentation room is kept at 70 degrees almost all year long so this schedule works well for me.

Depending on the batch you are making and fermentation temperature it could take from 5 to 7 days to reach your target. I see no need to test the SG until at least day 5.

I agree with masta gc with the only exception being that if one has a concern about wheteher fermentation is actually happening this can be verified with SG readings

I check at day 5 just cuz my house stays warm and things move fast here.
