Can someone tell me the alcohol I should end up with with these readings?

Day 1 Primary fermentation 1090

Day 8 Secondary fermentation 996

(I do think I may have drank more than I managed to syphon:h)

I hope it's close to 12.5%

this is the kit.

I make it about 12.3%, so you are close to where you want to be. (Use the formula (Initial SG - Final SG) x 131. In your case, 1.090 - 0.996 = 0.094 x 131 = 12.3%

Hamy:

I would have said 1.090 - .996 x 133 = 12.5%. Not much difference, and others use a formula that would yield a slightly higher %age.

But I would check the calibration of your hydrometer. Both of your readings seem high to me for this kit, and I've made a lot of them, but none in 4 years. I would have expected about 1.084 and .992.

Pretty much every Ken Ridge Classic kit I have made (and it was the best selling brand in the FoP that I ran from 2001 to 2007) had sg numbers close to those. But I've only made one KRC kit (a Merlot) in the last 3 years. It was 1.083 and .992.

forgive if this has been mentioned:

another formula

1.09-.996=.0940/.0074=12.7%

the government allows you a 1% variation.....so you could see a bottle on a shelf that says it is 11% and it may actually be anywhere from 10-12%
