I just bottled my first batch. It's a batch of rhubarb and I need some help help figuring my alchohol content... if possible. It started out with an SG of 1.090 and fermented out to .996. I got nervouses about how fast it fermented out.... so I added another 1 pound of sugar (to 2 gallons of wine). It's now down to .996 again. Is it possible to get an accurate alcohol reading with the added sugar?

Oh boy...

I do it this way:

[(SG Start)x1000] - [(SGfinish) x 1000]
------------------------------------------------
7.36

I changed the denominator. It should be 7.36!

So, let's take for example:

1.080x1000 - 0.990x1000
==================
7.36

Gives you roughly 12% alc.

1.090 - .996 X 1000 X .129 = 12.126 ABV that's for the first fermentation

Now if you took a SG for the second (after you added the 1lb of sugar)
you could do it again and get a second ABV and add them together to get
your final ABV

Hopefully someone else knows how much "juice" is in 1lb of sugar,
better for you to post how many gallons we are talking about to help
them.

I used a few different calculators I have and this is what I came up with:

Adding 1lb of sugar to a 2 gal batch will raise the SG by ~0.022 (.045/2)

(S.G. of 1.045 equals 16 oz. (one pound) sugar per U.S. gallon.)

1.090+ 0.022 = 1.112 - .996 X 1000 = 116 X .129 = 14.96 ABV

If you only added 1lb of sugar total using mastas #'s I'll say:

1.090 + .11 = 1.101 - .996 X 1000 = 105 X ,129 + 13.545

ABV 13.5

Sorry I made an error...added 1lb of sugar not 2lb

1lb of sugar to 2 gals should raise SG by ~0.0225 or rounded off to 0.022

Gosh - I'm so confused! I never would have been able to figure that on my own. Thanks for all the help.
