What kind of bucket do I need for a 1 gallon test batch during primary? And where do I get them? My buckets are 6.5gal or bigger, I'm assuming those are too big?

TIA

You can find a 2 gallon bucket on most online sites, and possibly local to you. I have one that I use for 1 gallon batches. But before I had that I did 1 gallon batches in my 5 gallon primary, it was a bit large for it, but worked fine.

Here's a link to one, but I'm sure the other vendors have it too if you prefer another:

It can be done in a big bucket but getting an sg reading without a test tube is near impossible due to the volume being spread out. Make sure when its near done to get it into a proper vessel as there is just way too much 02 in there and would oxidize your win\e fast.

This is what i got from harbor freight $32.99 now got mine on sale for $20.00. its 1.5gal - 4 gal. I also use them on top of my wood stove to mix sugar in. They work great.

You can also check with a local bakery or restaurant, as most of them get some sort of food in 2-3 gal buckets and most will just give them to you if you ask.

Uh, it doesn't need to be food grade?

I would recommend food grade, but as long as there new and sanitized id say you would be ok. I personally wouldn't use one of them, as mentioned above there are plenty of places to get food grade buckets free.
