Wine makers
This is not a heavy wine making topic but I was just wondering. Firstly, I see that we have some 11,200 plus members on the forum and we also have many guests. The guests out number the members at almost any given time, about 5 or 6 to one. Secondly, we surely do not attract all the wine makers in the US to our site. Therefore, my qustion is, Has anyone seen a number for how many wine makers there are in the US? It has to be fairly large given the number and distribution of suppliers and the activity on the site.

Don't have an idea of the numbers, but when talking with different folks it is amazing how many have tried making wine. Most are not still making it, but many have tried. Arne.

I think you are right, Arne. I see a lot of equipment being sold on Craigs List, just in the central Ohio area, so people come and go. I am also wondering if the weak economy has anything to do with more and more people entering the hobby. I know that we are doing a lot more homemade (bread, pasta, cheese, herbs, chicken jerky for the dogs, etc.) for cost reasons and we like the stuff we make more than store bought. I have had very few glasses of commercial wine since getting back into this hobby, mostly at a restaurant, and I can't believe I used to like the stuff.

I see very little to no wine equipment ever on Craigs list except old antique presses. I talk to a good many folks from my area that make wine and they say they pop in and out of here to read and learn but never come on to talk.

As a new guy, I have been scouring Craigslist. Carboys and corkers and bottling gear have popped up in the last three months . Maybe 6 listings in a small state like ct. Double that if you count old moldy presses.

Dan, here are some current listings in the Columbus, Ohio area if you or anyone else are interested. They seem a little "pricey" to me, but as the old purchasing saying goes, "You don't get what you deserve, you get what you negotiate."
